Conditions still matter.

The short answer

Biodegradable waste can be broken down by living processes under the right conditions. Non-biodegradable waste does not readily break down that way.

The sneaky phrase is “under the right conditions”. That is where lazy claims go to hide.

A word is not a waste route.

Kitchen examples

Food waste, garden cuttings and paper can be biodegradable in suitable systems. Mixed plastics, metals and glass are different materials with different routes.

But biodegradable does not automatically mean suitable for your home compost, your council food-waste collection or recycling route.

Why compostable is stricter

Compostable products should say what composting setting they are designed for. That is more useful than vague biodegradable wording.
