The short answer
Composting gets easier when you stop treating it like alchemy. Balance the mix, keep it aired, keep it damp, chop bulky bits and follow the route.

The five tips
One: add browns with greens. Vegetable peelings need cardboard, dry leaves or woody bits to stop the heap going wet and sour.
09:40
Two: let air in. Turning, mixing or adding twiggy material helps the tiny living things do their job.

Three: keep it damp, not drowned. Compost should feel alive, not like soup.

Four: chop bulky material. Smaller pieces give the heap more surface area to work on.

Five: respect the route. A council caddy, a home heap and a commercial site are not the same thing.
