Composting gets easier when you stop treating it like alchemy. Balance the mix, keep it aired, keep it damp, chop bulky bits and follow the route.

One: add browns with greens. Vegetable peelings need cardboard, dry leaves or woody bits to stop the heap going wet and sour.
09:40Two: let air in. Turning, mixing or adding twiggy material helps the tiny living things do their job.
09:50Three: keep it damp, not drowned. Compost should feel alive, not like soup.
10:00Four: chop bulky material. Smaller pieces give the heap more surface area to work on.
10:10Five: respect the route. A council caddy, a home heap and a commercial site are not the same thing.
