The short answer
Plastic bottles have value when a system is built to collect them. Without that system, the value leaks into bins, litter and confusion.

A bottle is not a coin until someone builds the return machine.

Money changes behaviour only when the route is clear.
Deposit schemes
England and Northern Ireland are scheduled to start a deposit return scheme for many single-use drink containers on 1 October 2027.

Until then, follow local recycling rules. Do not invent a deposit scheme in your head; shops get funny about that.

Why it matters
Deposits can make bottles worth bringing back. Producer rules and recycled-material markets can also make packaging less disposable.
