How long can plastic last?

No single clock.

No single clock.

The short answer

Plastic does not have one neat decomposition clock. It depends on the material, thickness, sunlight, oxygen, heat and where it ends up.

Nature is not running a kitchen timer.

18:03

A fixed year count is usually too tidy.

What often happens

Many plastics break into smaller pieces rather than vanishing cleanly. Those fragments can persist and move through the environment.

18:12

That is why “it breaks down” is not enough. What it becomes, where it goes and how long it takes all matter.

How compostable differs

Compostable claims need conditions. A certified compostable product is not the same as random plastic slowly fragmenting outside.
