The short answer
Plastic does not have one neat decomposition clock. It depends on the material, thickness, sunlight, oxygen, heat and where it ends up.

What often happens
Many plastics break into smaller pieces rather than vanishing cleanly. Those fragments can persist and move through the environment.
18:12That is why “it breaks down” is not enough. What it becomes, where it goes and how long it takes all matter.

Compostable claims need conditions. A certified compostable product is not the same as random plastic slowly fragmenting outside.
